Original year 2000 Sleeve Notes from Lab4 - Evilution!
The last year for us has been totally wild. We started 1999 with the release of our first album “Neurocide” which almost lead us to the end of Lab-4. We certainly had some of the best gigs of our lives and made a lot of new friends. We were also very pleased with the album and it received nothing but praise wherever it was reviewed but we ended up not quite sure of why or what we were doing.
The business side of things has never been something we have enjoyed (actually we really hate it) but we have always looked at it as a relatively small price to pay for the fun we have the rest of the time when we’re out doing gigs or in the studio writing.
The whole “Neurocide” project (apart from the actual album itself) left us and Trebleate (the label it was to be released on) convinced us of the existence of a “Neurocide” curse. Almost everything that could have gone wrong did including thousands of C.D. booklets getting lost by a courior, thousands more getting soaked in oil in a warehouse and then the release date getting delayed by about a month while the distributor put it under “investigation” because
of it’s title!?!?.
This along with all the industry bullshit we had to put up with through most of 1998 all added up to start throwing the balance for us a bit. We seemed to be spending more and more time stressed out with business and less and less time writing music and decided that we would take time off from September 1999 until New Years Eve, at which point we would either be ready to pack it in or to start a fresh.
Then one day at the beginning of July we got a couple of e-mails, the first asking us if we would play Dance Valley in Holland in August for an estimated 40,000 strong crowd and the second was from Japan askingus to play for Viva at the legedary Liquid Room in Tokyo in September. We decided that we would do both gigs (difficult decision!) but stick to the plan of having a break when we returned from Japan. Both trips went so well that when we got back the last thing we wanted to do was stop gigging. We both felt inspired again and got straight back into the studio (unplugged the telephones!) and started writing.
It wasn’t that those two gigs were any better than the previous 8 months worth but it seemed that just by being out of the country and particularly somewhere as far away and “alien” to us as Japan put some distance between us and the bullshit. It was just us, the music and a mad crowd again and the balance was returned (more play than work!). “Evilution“ is our reflection of our last year of gigs and clubbing and the beginnings of wherever we might end up over the next year. As with the last album, the live C.D. is a gift from us to you so don’t let your record shop rip you offand charge you for a double album!.
We had originally planned to record the set in New Jersey on New Years Eve 2000 but due to an utterly incompetent sound engineer we came back with a recording that was no where near a
standard that we would release.
We were prepared to spend time trying to repair the recording in the studio and meanwhile thought we would record the set at Pickle just for the hell of it. During roughly the second track in the set, on stage we had decided that, provided it came out well, we would be mad not to release this recording instead. The sound was perfect, the crowd was perfect and the atmosphere all night totally rocked.
